Bringing Tipper Back Into Work

I have just started to bring Tipper back into work. We still aren’t one hundered percent sure what’s wrong with him and why he has been lame on and off, but he has had a lot of time off and he seems to be pretty good so I’ve started to do some work with him. I am just walking him around and trying to get him to stretch with a nice active walk. I am trying to make sure he doesn’t get lazy with one leg, when I first started he seemed a bit lazy with his off fore but today he has been great for me and I was really happy with him.

He’s getting a lot better about picking his feet up too. He is still very unhappy about having it done but will at least pick his foot up for me now, he’s still resisting a little but I am hoping that in even more time he will be good about having his feet done.

At the moment I am just walking him around the paddock in straight lines and only turning at the corner and then back to a straight line. I’ve also been getting him to halt when I ask him as he is a bit rude when it comes to people and will do things like just walk straight through you, it’s quite annoying but he is getting better and is learning, well I think he is anyway.

As for why we’ve been having soundness problems I don’t really know for sure, he has poor conformation which could have led to injury in the past maybe even more than one. Still he is on the mend now (touch wood) and all I can really do is try what I am trying and see how he gets on, if he shows signs of lameness again then he’ll just have to go straight back to rest, but let’s hope that won’t be necessary.

Poor Pip

Today has been another good day, I lunged Niko and he went well again, also one of my brothers sat on him while I lunged him. My brother is just starting so he just sat on him in walk and did a little in trot, but it all went well. I also did some more jumps with Murphy here is a photo of Murphy and I going over the jump, it’s a small jump I know but I am very happy with him.

Little Murphy got a treat for every jump that he performed successfully, here he is having a fuss and treat. Tipper is standing behind Murphy looking quite hateful, he too did some work just the same stuff as yesterday but I was happy with him, oh and there was one more thing about Tipper.

Yes Tipper did do this, poor Pip has had his bum brutally assaulted, Tipper sure does have some jaws on him, as you can see it’s nothing serous, but it is a good job horses don’t sit down like we do, still I am sure that the haylage will help Pip feel better about it all

Fix You up Good and Proper

WARNING this post contains blood and gore.

In my last post I mentioned Tipper being kicked and sent lame, well he isn’t lame any more so take that lameness and don’t come back. Anyway here is what’s going on with his injury, and how we are treating it.

This is his injury on day one, it is quite easy to see how bad it is, its not too bad just a nasty flesh wound, but obviously its pretty painful, you should be able to see a flap of skin, now the vet would probably cut this off but we haven’t got anything suitable for the job so it stayed.

Here is day two, as you can see the injury has become infected and has swollen despite us using Cut and Graze, Chestfields product. I am not surprised a nasty wound normally gets infected, but it is nothing too bad just a bit of puss.

Day three, you can see it is draining well from the mess down his leg all that bad stuff coming out, so that’s good.

Day three still, we used Hibiscrub to clean out the wound making sure to get all of the puss out and giving the wound a good soaking in Hibiscrub to help kill off any infection.

Day four, as you can see it is looking pretty good now after having been cleaned again, and the swelling has gone down a lot to so that is great, so like I said at the start of this post he is no longer lame, and is well on his way to full recovery. Sorry to any of you that are squeamish, I hope it wasn’t too bad and I will understand if you skip this post.

Thanks for the comments on my last post.

Sherri, yep it does take quite sometime giving them all a rub down, but it is fun and the photos are sweet, of course it also stops them losing weight from getting cold. And as for Tippers’ wound I hope this post has shown you that he is well on his way to recovery.

Abby, our horses don’t have hind shoes, Niko’s got the fronts on, and so has Tipper, but the rest of them are unshod, probably for the best considering how much damage they do to one another with no shoes. Poor Spotty getting kicked all the time that’s just not fair. Tipper is young and clumsy, but I am sure he will grow out of his clumsiness, hopefully sooner rather then later.

Debi, hmm maybe I am a horse collector, but only two of them are mine, Niko and Tipper, the others all belong to my family, but yes we do have quite a lot of them. Yes it’s most likely they are still sorting out who’s who but I hope this won’t happen again. How old is Ace I was just wondering?

allhorsestuff, feel free to call Tipper or Bold Hawk what you like, but please stick to one so I know who you mean, I will still call him Tipper but that doesn’t mean you have to I don’t mind if you call him Bold or Tipperhawk. Yep I am looking forward to seeing him without his scars. You said about an ill fitted saddle but you also said you have got rid of all the white hairs so no harm done, I am sure she appreciates what you are doing for her now. Yes I was wondering if it might hurt him to pick his feet up.

Where Did My Finger Go?

She looks so nice doesn’t she and she is, but her teeth are stronger than I realized much stronger than I knew, and today was the day I learned just how strong they are. So here is what happened; Madeline went out first as always, my Mother turned her out. Meanwhile I was getting Niko ready to go out, as I was turning Niko out my Mother opened the gate to let Niko and I into the paddock, just as we went in my Mother saw a bucket, Madeline was eating from it.

We stopped her eating it which is a good job too, it was goat feed. Anyway my Mother went to get something to clean up the rest of the goat feed, meanwhile I lead Madeline around to stop her eating any more goat feed, and then one little nip.

And I ended up with this stylish finger warmer, yep that’s right she wentt straight through my finger nail and took a bit off the side too. Oh well that is just what I get for not paying attention, I guess she did not want to be taken away from her goat feed. Madeline is all right despite the goat feed and I’m sure my finger will heal up, I love Madeline no less and I am sure she meant no harm or not a lot.

Thanks for your comments on my last post.

Abby yes I am schooling Madeline for my Mother so yes I was riding her, not sure if I will be able to ride with my finger how it is we will see.
